Solar Modules in their Lowest Price Ever

The consultancy firm GTM Research published, last week, a report that shows how low the prices of solar modules have dropped in the last few years. They are reaching the market for as low as $0.63 per watt in the second trimester of 2014, the biggest price drop in the photovoltaic market.

In the same period of last year, market prices for solar modules were around $0.67 per watt. According to GTM, the reasons behind this price drop are the reduction in the price of the components, higher demand for these products in places with low prices (like the Latin America) and a drop in the market price in places where they were higher (like Japan).

According to Jade Jones, analyst for GTM Research, "this fall in the market price in the first half of this year is different from drops seen in past years, as those were related to a severe offer excess". However, the prices should soon go up again, as analysts expect some raises in the price of silver and polysilicon.

Another report, by the consultancy firm Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), suggests that the solar, photovoltaic and wind energies will reach some parity with the prices of coal and natural gas, without the help of subsidies or other financial helps, in the main markets of Asia, like China, Japan and India, by 2020.

According to BNEF, the leveled costs of energy for the solar energy will reach $70-112/MWh in Asia until 2020, while the wind energy will reach a cost of $56-166/MWh. By 2030 the costs are expected to be even smaller. Besides, the new installed capacities in these areas will be of two-thirds of renewable energies between now and 2030, with the addition of 800GW of solar energy, 500GW of wind energy and 440GW of hydroelectric energy.

BNEF also points that the prices for coal and natural gas will be around $57-131/MWh and $60-143/MWh, respectively.
